Did God Divorce Israel? Nothing could compare to God’s love for the children of Israel. They were as precious as fine stones in his eyes. God is a jealous God. He doesn’t want to be compared with any other god or idol.
Taking Judah as an example, the prophet tells him, “Your maker is your husband—the LORD Almighty is his name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth” (Isaiah 54:5; cf. Jeremiah 3:14; 31:32).

By worshiping idols and abandoning the Lord, Israel frequently displayed the traits of an unfaithful spouse. God said this because of idolatry: “I gave faithless Israel her divorce paperwork and expelled her for all of her extramarital affairs.” Because she didn’t care about Israel’s immorality, she soiled the land and engaged in adultery.
Without a capable leader, the populace quickly defied God and lost faith in him. Even worse, they ended up worshiping fake deities, which would be the biggest insult to God’s face.
After helping and defending these people, they turn around and worship false gods. Israel’s children’s evil and sinful acts displeased God, making him turn his back on them for some time.
Israel’s Unfaithfulness To God
Indeed the children of Israel committed a sinful and lustful act that displeased God. God rebuked them for doing so, but it fell on deaf ears. In this case, one can see that Israel’s children were indeed unfaithful to God’s commandments.
Israel is a nation that God created to serve Him. They were told to obey His word and worship Him alone. In return for their loyalty and devotion, He promised them an everlasting kingdom that would never end (Deut 28:1–8).
However, Israel has been unfaithful in their worship of God by refusing to keep His commandments (Exo 34:12; Deut 9:4–6; 30:3). They have even tried to trick him into giving them more land than he originally intended (Isaiah 43:27–28)!
The failure of Israel to follow the instructions given to them in Exo 20:2 and Deut 4:2-3 demonstrates their disobedience to God. These verses tell us that we should have one another’s backs in times of need and not take advantage of others when they are vulnerable (Eph 6:1). Isreal did not follow these instructions when they attacked

When David became king and established Jerusalem as his capital city, he brought great prosperity to Israel—until it was time for him to die. After that point, things started going downhill as they turned away from God again!
Forsaking God’s commandments is another way of terminating your relationship with him.
A situation like this, where the Israelites turned away their attention from God, was a risky one that must have made the presence of God depart from their midst as he did to Adam and Eve when they ate the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden, thereby making God lay curses on them.
Where In The Bible Did God Divorce Israel?
In the holy book of Isaiah, we can see that God divorced Israel. For example, as recorded in the Bible
(Isaiah3:6–10) In the reign of Josiah, the LORD also addressed me, asking, “Have you seen what backslidden Israel has done?” She has visited every lofty mountain and sat beneath every lush tree, where she has played the harlot. After she had completed all of these tasks, I commanded her to return to me, but she chose not to. And her scheming sister Judah noticed it.
Then I realized that I had imprisoned and granted a divorce to backsliding Israel for all the reasons she had committed adultery. Her treacherous sister Judah, however, showed no fear and went off to commit adultery as well. So she contaminated the land and committed adultery via her casual harlotry.
Did God Ever Divorce Israel?
The Bible says that Israel was saved in the land of Egypt (Exodus 12:41–42), and upon reaching the promised land, they were given a law by which they could live (Deuteronomy 5:1–3). At that point, they were no longer considered to be strangers. Their identity as God’s people had been restored.
But this didn’t mean that their relationship with God had ended. The people still needed guidance, and their relationship with Him had to be maintained through worship and worshipers who would keep His commandments (Deuteronomy 6:4).
In the Old Testament, God told Moses that he would destroy the Israelites because they were not doing what he had told them to do. He told Moses that he would strike them with plagues and make them wander in the wilderness for 40 years.
When Moses asked him why God said they were not doing what he had commanded, he had commanded them to make sacrifices for him, but they were not. They were also not following him in worshiping him as a God.
So God decided to divorce them—from his presence for all time (Deuteronomy 24:1–4). This is why we call it “divorce”—because it’s a break from God’s presence (Psalm 127:1–5).
God compares His connection to Israel to a marriage. Verse 6 claims that Israel committed adultery. God offered His bride a second chance in verse 7 to turn around and return to Him.
Israel refused to turn back, and in response to Israel’s adultery, God carried out the instructions in His Law regarding a husband whose wife has lost her husband’s favor.
He locked her up after giving her a divorce bill. We must acknowledge the distinction between “put away” (shalach) and “bill of divorce” (keriythuwth). If they were identical, God would have acted in verse 8 as follows:
It is important to remember that God’s union with Israel is a union in the “spiritual realm” rather than a “physical marriage” between two people.
Even more significant is that God was spiritually wed to Israel. Because marriage is the closest thing to a spiritual absolute that a man may experience while remaining in the flesh, God refers to His connection with Israel and Christ’s with the church as marriages. The epitome of marital love is God’s love for Israel.
How Many Times Did God Divorce Israel?
The Bible says that God divorced Israel four times. The first time was when He sent them into exile in Egypt, then when He brought them back to the land of Canaan, and then again when they were conquered by Assyria and taken into captivity.
Finally, God divorced them again when they rebelled against Him and stayed in Egypt for 400 years.
In the Old Testament, God divorced Israel more than once. He first divorced the Israelites when they rejected their God and turned away from him (1 Samuel 15:23–29). This time, God again divorced the children of Israel after they had committed adultery with pagan women, crossed over borders, and married them (Leviticus 20:10–21).
The ten commandments were made to guide us, not to destroy us. It’s like a searchlight that refers you to a life of God-fearing and sin-free living. Whenever God’s commandments are defiled, it shows that we no longer care about them. Just like the Israelites, they were carried away by the lust of their flesh, causing God to divorce them.

God had divorced Isreal in the past because of their sins. The Bible talks about Isreal as a woman who is married but disobeys her husband. God left Isreal to wander for a period because of their sin of breaking the ten commandments. So, yes. God had divorced Isreal before.
